SPEND A DAY IN THE PARK

On Saturday, May 11, the Niles-Buchanan YMCA is celebrating the Be Healthy Berrien Kick-Off with our free Day in the Park community event to get more families moving, learning and living healthier. All ages and fitness levels welcome plus Giveaways! Join us at Niles Riverfront Park for:
  • Fun Run 5k 7:30-8:30am

  • Group fitness classes 9:00am-1:00pm

  • Family Picnic 1:00-2:00pm

Our Y is offering an opportunity for guidance to better health. It's a 12 week nutrition and exercise program called "Get Healthy-Get Fit". More specifically it involves weekly group meetings with a dietician and fitness guidance with one of our Personal Trainers. Participant strive to achieve a higher level of wellness.

Are you looking for something to do this summer? The Niles-Buchanan YMCA offers 4 on 4 Co-Ed sand volleyball leagues beginning in June and running through July. Why play sand volleyball? It provides participants the opportunity to socialize, and it offers moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise. Players can very easily burn 300 to 400 calories per game, as the players are constantly active and moving around the court. Sand volleyball is much easier on the players' feet, legs and joints. However, the wonderful thing about playing sand volleyball is that you don't have to be a world class athlete to enjoy it.

On Saturday, April 27, the Niles-Buchanan YMCA is celebrating YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day® with a free community event to get more families moving, learning and living healthier. Healthy Kids Day, a national initiative of the Y, takes place at 1,900 Y’s and features fun, educational activities such as Zumba, swimming, dancing, gymnastics, games, crafts, healthy snacks, an inflatable obstacle course and more!

The weather is getting warmer and you know what that means! Grab your glove and join us for our YMCA CO-ED Slow Pitch Adult Softball League! This league is intended for everyone to have fun, meet people, and enjoy the game of softball. It also offers recreation, fitness, competition and skill development for adults seeking a fun way to stay fit and connected. The maximum number of teams is 10 so be sure and sign up early to ensure your spot.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a research-based program that offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals. This program is currently offered at nearly 300 YMCA locations across the country.

NEW ADDITION TO YMCA PERSONAL TRAINING

Joining our Y staff is Steven Grayson. Many in our community already know Steven as a coach for more than 20 years at Niles High School and other local schools and camps. Steven will be offering personal training with special attention to strength training. He will also be supervising the weight room. Steven has been certified since 2000 by the National Federation of Personal Trainers. To schedule an appointment with Steven or any of the other Y’s certified personal trainers please stop by Member Services or call the Y at 683.1552.

After conducting a national search, the Niles-Buchanan YMCA Board of Directors has selected Mark Weber as the new CEO. Since joining the Y in July as Interim CEO, Weber jumped right in to lead the YMCA staff and volunteers in efforts to improve internal functions and actively pursue new initiatives. “Our goal is to expand the Y’s presence beyond our facility and more effectively partner with schools and other community groups to increase our outreach to youth, family and community members.” stated Weber.

NUTRITION COUNSELING NOW AVAILABLE

Denise Peters, YMCA Director of Healthy and Fitness, recently announced the addition of Nutrition Counseling to the list of Y services.

We are excited to offer individuals and families affordable nutrition counseling with Marcy Herbert, a registered dietician, who is also certified in pediatric weight management and dietary counseling. Marcy has been practicing for 15 years in the areas of weight management, diabetes, heart disease, food allergies, and other chronic conditions. Marcy is already active in the Y and currently volunteers as a nutrition guide for the YMCA Mariners Swim Team.
