Welcome to the

Niles-Buchanan YMCA

The Niles-Buchanan YMCA strengthens the foundations of our community through well-being and fitness, camps, swim, sports and play, and other activities for people of all ages, incomes and abilities. We’re more than just a place to work out. At the Y, we help build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all with the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility at the heart of everything we do.

With a commitment to nurturing youth development, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social responsibility, the Y ensures that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a research-based program that offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals. This program is currently offered at nearly 300 YMCA locations across the country.

Joining our Y staff is Steven Grayson. Many in our community already know Steven as a coach for more than 20 years at Niles High School and other local schools and camps. Steven will be offering personal training with special attention to strength training. He will also be supervising the weight room. Steven has been certified since 2000 by the National Federation of Personal Trainers. To schedule an appointment with Steven or any of the other Y’s certified personal trainers please stop by Member Services or call the Y at 683.1552.

After conducting a national search, the Niles-Buchanan YMCA Board of Directors has selected Mark Weber as the new CEO. Since joining the Y in July as Interim CEO, Weber jumped right in to lead the YMCA staff and volunteers in efforts to improve internal functions and actively pursue new initiatives. “Our goal is to expand the Y’s presence beyond our facility and more effectively partner with schools and other community groups to increase our outreach to youth, family and community members.” stated Weber.

Denise Peters, YMCA Director of Healthy and Fitness, recently announced the addition of Nutrition Counseling to the list of Y services.

We are excited to offer individuals and families affordable nutrition counseling with Marcy Herbert, a registered dietician, who is also certified in pediatric weight management and dietary counseling. Marcy has been practicing for 15 years in the areas of weight management, diabetes, heart disease, food allergies, and other chronic conditions. Marcy is already active in the Y and currently volunteers as a nutrition guide for the YMCA Mariners Swim Team.

To schedule an appointment stop by Member Services or call the Y at 683.1552.

February is American Heart Month and as a leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening community through healthy living, the Niles-Buchanan YMCA urges everyone to take steps to prevent chronic diseases, such as heart disease, so they can lead longer, healthier lives.

On January 21 the weather outside was all wintery and inside the Niles-Buchanan YMCA the talk was of being prepared. In honor of Martin Luther King Day, the Y and the American Red Cross hosted a Community Winter Preparedness Day. Supplies to build basic first aid kits were provided by the Red Cross along with information about preparing for winter and other emergencies.

On Wednesday, Jan. 23, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) launched the new MI Healthier Tomorrow campaign aimed at helping people make the changes to impact their future today by asking Michigan residents to pledge to lose 10 percent of their body weight. The Y is one of several important partner organizations that is offering support for this program. This means you can expect to see an impact right here in Niles!

We have exciting news! The Y is exploring a potential partnership with Ultra Camp to provide racquetball courts to our members. They are building new offices by Plym Park just behind our back parking lot and are considering including racquetball courts.

We are conducting an online survey to assess interest. Paper copies are also available at our Member Services Center. What you say could make an impact! Let us know your thoughts.

The Niles-Buchanan YMCA will host a Community Winter Preparedness Day in collaboration with the American Red Cross of Berrien County in celebration of Martin Luther King Day. The public is invited to participate in this informative event held at the YMCA from 10:00 am until 4:30 pm.

The Niles-Buchanan YMCA is offering a new, exciting and colorful 5K on June 22, 2013 and you get to name it! This event has been called the most fun and the happiest race in the world.
